At Optimal Living Therapy, we provide a range of services that support individuals and providers navigating Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

While we no longer provide SDA certification ourselves, we work closely with participants, support coordinators, and providers to ensure the SDA process is clinically sound, evidence-informed, and participant-centred.
We offer:
  • Home and Living Consultations – to help determine whether SDA may be a suitable pathway and build strong supporting evidence
  • SDA Consulting – including reviews of SDA assessments, advice on provider fit, and navigating the interface between functional need and design
  • SDA expert advice – when there’s uncertainty around eligibility, design category, or compliance, we help clarify what’s required and how best to proceed

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is the physical environment (eg. a home) of a participant that has been specially designed for people with high support needs and access requirements.

The NDIS provides SDA funding for participants so that they can have more choice around where they live, whilst also ensuring those homes can support their accessibility needs. Currently there are limited homes in Western Australia that have been certified to an SDA standard, thus limiting the options available to those participants that have been granted funding. The goal is to have many homes around different areas of WA available.

SDA Consulting: Strategic Support and Expert Input

Our team brings a rare combination of clinical experience, NDIS knowledge, and practical understanding of the SDA ecosystem. We’re often engaged to provide high-level input where the path forward isn’t clear, or where there’s a disconnect between assessments, participant needs, and built form.

Here’s what our SDA consulting work typically involves:

  • Second opinions on SDA reports, applications, and designs
  • Independent reviews of other assessors’ work to ensure clarity, completeness, and alignment with NDIS expectations
  • Strategic advice when participants and providers need help understanding how SDA eligibility, design category, supports, and certification fit together
  • Provider support in developing participant-centred housing options and interpreting compliance requirements through a functional lens

We don’t just look at paperwork, we bring context, nuance, and clinical reasoning to complex decisions so the outcome is more than just “technically compliant”.

Why choose Optimal Living Therapy?

We’re not here to replace your assessor, builder, or certifier but we’ll help you get the most from each part of the process. Our consulting team works across the NDIS, housing, and clinical spaces, which means we can bring clarity when the pieces don’t quite fit.

We support participants, providers, and support coordinators to make informed, confident decisions, because getting SDA right can be life changing for participants, but its complexity isn’t a walk in the park for anyone.

SDA Consulting

We are very experienced in the NDIS and SDA. Our unique combination of qualifications and experience at Optimal Living Therapy mean that we can provide consultation on any SDA project using our experience working with participants and how they interact with their built environment.
